Our Programs

Whether your child is thriving in school or just surviving, ALL students benefit from our programs. They provide students, ages 3 through 18, with opportunities to engage in a wide range of pre-collegiate activities through the academic school year and summer months. The curriculum is aligned with common core standards for college and career readiness through our partnership with the University of Colorado, and also provides additional academic support services. Our safe and nurturing environment fosters positive adult and peer relationships.

PRE-COLLEGIATE EARLY CHILDHOOD DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM

The journey of One starts with a first step!

FLC’s pre-collegiate early-childhood development programs provide the structure and teach the skills necessary to take that first step.

Our programs are among the highest quality in the state of Colorado, based on evaluations by the Boulder Valley School District and the Colorado State Department of Education. Five days a week we provide quality literacy-based, multicultural, and bilingual preschool classes for children, and full-time childcare for their working parents that is affordable and accessible to everyone.

PRE-COLLEGIATE ELEMENTARY DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM

Taking the next steps – Building strength and gaining confidence!

In our pre-collegiate elementary after-school program, we help children master the core concepts and study habits necessary for academic success. Each child has a tutor to assist with homework and is given personalized math and reading reinforcement activities.

This program also aids in the development of social skills and creative growth through community-supported workshops and activities. Health and nutrition play a key role in our program, with healthy snacks provided daily as well as frequent visits from nutritionists and athletes.

PRE-COLLEGIATE ELEMENTARY SUMMER DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM

Our commitment to the children doesn’t end with the school year!

FLC offers a six-week summer program that builds on the foundation set during the after-school program.

We introduce children to their community through educational field trips, sports, art, community service, and guest presentations. By keeping their minds active during the summer, this program helps with the transition back to school in the fall.

PRE-COLLEGIATE MIDDLE SCHOOL DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM

Picking up speed on the path to success!

The FLC’s pre-collegiate middle school after-school program provides academic support for students in grades 6–8 through tutoring, mentoring, and educational enrichment activities. Each student receives daily academic case management by staff, which includes tracking grades, school attendance, and assignments, as well as meeting regularly with teachers.

This program is also designed to foster positive decision-making skills for success in middle school and beyond.

PRE-COLLEGIATE MIDDLE SCHOOL SUMMER DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM

The learning never stops!

FLC’s middle school summer program involves students in activities that build leadership, team cooperation, and athletic skills, including, track & field, soccer, football, volleyball, basketball, softball, tennis, and golf.

Students also develop academic skills to prepare them for college and the work world, and learn to give back to the community through a variety of philanthropic-related community-service projects.

Our additional academic support services include:

  • Comprehensive educational case management between students, parents, and public/private school personnel to ensure each student is on track with fulfilling his or her highest potential
  • Mastery of academic skills: remediation/teaching basic and advanced skills in math, science, writing, reading, note taking, study skills, effective listening, and communication skills
  • Provide basic tools for learning: back-to-school supplies, and materials and resources for school projects

We aim to improve the quality and efficiency of each program, including completing national accreditation for our pre-collegiate youth development programs. We are members of America's Promise National Alliance and Colorado's Alliance for After School Programs.

PRE-COLLEGIATE HIGH SCHOOL DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM

Our high school pre-collegiate college prep program offers after-school tutoring and mentoring services, SAT/ACT prep and college-admissions workshops, and one-on-one instruction. Students receive academic case management to ensure that their performance levels in all subject areas meet the requirements for the next phase of their education.

This program also teaches positive decision-making skills for success in high school and beyond.

PRE-COLLEGIATE HIGH SCHOOL SUMMER DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM

FLC’s accredited summer high school courses are available through a partnership with the Boulder Valley School District, Brigham Young University, and other online high school courses. These collaborations enable us to offer a variety of courses in both a classroom setting and online.

Students also participate in academic activities and events, giving them the opportunity to visit college campuses, meet with admission officers, participate in leadership-development classes, receive financial aid training, take part in community-service projects, and attend SAT and ACT prep courses.

Our additional academic support services include:

FAMILY DEVELOPMENT AND ADULT EDUCATION PROGRAMS

Because the family is foundational for any current or future success of children - and the next generation of workers and citizens - adult education programs gives parents and other adults the opportunity to complete their high school education, improve and increase employment opportunities, and enhance their literacy skills for family and self-empowerment. Classes in ESL levels I and II, GED, job internship program for welfare recipients, and career-development training are done through Intercompio, Boulder Reads, and Boulder Valley Literacy Programs. We also provide:

  • Full-time crisis intervention and referral services to other community resources and agencies
  • Family sustainable resources - donated food, clothing, household items, etc.
  • Parenting classes and parent support systems
  • Computer technology classes, English literacy
  • Validation and support services that assist parents in their role as first teachers and primary advocates for their children

Spreading success – Fulfilling needs and enriching minds!

The Family Learning Center supplies basic needs for families in the form of 20,000 pounds of food each month though our partnership with Community Food Share, as well as clothing, furniture, and household goods though community donations.

Additionally, families can fulfill educational needs through FLC’s literacy, language, and computer courses.

FAMILY LITERACY

Every One has a story to read, write, and share!

The Family Learning Center’s comprehensive family literacy services are available for all families with children up to eight years old. Opportunities for families include our Parent and Child Time (PACT) learning together program. This program increases parental understanding of the significance of early-childhood development for success in school and life.

We also offer parenting and life skills classes. FLC’s programs provide resources for families to connect with society and navigate community institutions, such as school systems; the business community; and housing, healthcare, and social service agencies.

ADULT EDUCATION PROGRAMS

Adult-education programs give parents and other adults the opportunity to complete their high school education, improve and increase employment opportunities, and enhance their literacy skills for family and self-empowerment. COMPUTER TECHNOLOGY

No one can be guaranteed lifetime employment, but education can provide lifetime employability!

To help the families we serve prepare for the world of work and meet the challenges of the 21st century, FLC offers computer classes levels I–IV, advanced computer classes, and Internet-access technology programs.

COMMUNITY OUTREACH AND DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMS

One Community – Our space is your space!

As a member of the community, the Family Learning Center opens its doors to area residents for family celebrations and gatherings, and offers technical assistance to hundreds of residents of San Juan del Centro, Boulder's largest low-income housing project, and other low-income housing sites.

We provide our facilities for community social, cultural, and educational activities to Boulder's Northeast neighborhood and the entire community.

We also make our vans available to other nonprofit organizations and provide space for community groups and activities, such as the Boulder Police Annex, the Boulder Valley School District, SIT team meetings, bilingual reading programs, and summer reading programs.
