The Family Learning Center is currently recruiting volunteers for the following programs:
Tutoring & Mentoring
Board of Directors
Computer Lab
School-age Program:
Volunteers to serve as tutors and mentors for children grades kindergarten through 12.

Early Childhood Program:
Volunteers are needed to assist preschool teachers with one-on-one activities with children ages 29 months to 5 years.
Adult Literacy:
Volunteers are needed to work one-on-one with adults enrolled in the Center's English as a second language, GED, parenting, life skills, and computer classes.
Fund Development:
The Center needs volunteers to help with its special events (i.e. Penfield Tate Humanitarian Awards Dinner & Silent Auction, Cinco de Mayo celebration, Volunteer Recognition Reception, etc.).
Board of Directors:
The Center is looking for Board members with the following expertise: financial planning, marketing, corporate relations, fund-raising and special events planning.
Tutoring & Mentoring
The Family Learning Center of Boulder County seeks volunteer mentors and tutors to work with at-risk youth on a long-term, one-on-one basis. The program is designed to encourage disadvantaged youth to graduate from high school and go on to college. Every volunteer should provide a safe, meaningful and trustful relationship with the student. Training and a tutor handbook will be provided.
Goals:
- To keep children in school
- To help children progess academically
Objectives and Responsibilities of Tutor:
- To work at least one school semester with my child or group of children
- To tutor my child on a regular basis, a minimum of one day per week
- To fill out brief written reports on each tutoring session
- Meet with the after-school staff and report on the progress and/or concerns about the child(ren)
- To recieve training where necessary
- To act as a positive role model providing guidance, support and encouragement for my child
- To encourage high academic standards and emotional growth
- To be consistent and dependable, not making promises you cannot keep

Board of Directors
Board members commit three years of their time, which includes monthly board meetings in Boulder. Board members as well as non-board members can also get involved in the following committees:

- Charter School Committee
- Fund Development Committee
- Finance Committee
- Special Events Committee

Computer Lab
There are several volunteer opportunities in the computer lab, including Volunteer Instructor and Volunteer Lab Monitor. Job duties for each position are included below, as well as specifications of the lab equipment.
Volunteer Instructor
Responsibilities:
- Teach individual or group classes to adults and youth in the Kalmia Community. Subjects include basic computer use, Windows, word processing, Internet tools and web-site creation
Requirements:
- Knowledge of the software taught in the class
- Some experience teaching computer skills either to individuals or groups
Volunteer Lab Monitor
Minimum commitment: On going, 1-2 hours per week.
Responsibilities:
- Assist adults and youth at the Family Learning Center on using computers in an informal environment
- Help with school research, writing, resumes, etc.
Requirements:
- Knowledge of any of the following: Windows, Microsoft Word, web browsing
The lab currently has 26 workstations running Windows XP and loaded with Internet Explorer and Office 2003. Each machine is connected to the Internet through a DSL connection.
